"My main preoccupation is the landscape - often the wilderness landscape - presented both as an en plein air subject and as studio work.
I see the distinction as important as well as trying to break down the barrier between the two. Plein air work is just as resolved and 'finished' as the studio work; studio work has just as much energy and spontaneity as the plein air work. They feed off each other - each can only exist successfully with the other.
I take elements central to drawing into my paintings and painterly elements into my drawing. Mark making is always to the fore, but not in isolation - the marks are always concerned with finding form, contour, allowing the viewer to move through the landscape and also responding to movement, energy, the anxiety of capturing the fleeting moment.
I intend an exuberant expressionism to interact with stillness and contemplation; this is the contradiction at the heart of my approach to painting".
