Craig Waddell

Landscape painting has long dominated the history of Australian art and Waddell is part of a new generation of artists that is reinventing and reinvigorating the subject. Waddell’s major oil “Morning Glory” was selected as a finalist in the 2005 Wynne prize for landscape painting at the Art Gallery of NSW. As a result, a magnificent collagraph of the same title was developed in conjunction with master print maker Paul Smith, and released in August 2005. Sensitively developed, this fine print work displays all the qualities which make Waddell one of the most highly sought young painters. His colour and layering are exquisite, with a meditative attention to the land, referencing his Australian roots and Asian studies.

Craig Waddell was born in Sydney in 1973. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the National Art School in 1999 and a Masters of Fine Art in Printmaking at the Chiang Mai University, Thailand in 2003. His work has been featured in many solo and group shows in Australia and Asia. In 2004 he was awarded The Paddington Art Prize, The Norville Australian Landscape Prize, The Waverly Art Painting Prize and The National Arts Atelier Prize. He was a Finalist in The Dobell Drawing Prize in 2004 and The Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2005. Craig was also the recipient of the Pat Corrigan Traveling Scholarship, and highly commended for the Lloyd Rees Memorial Award and the Brett Whitely Traveling Scholarship.
